Snakes
We have a wide selection of snakes available, including: Corn Snakes (including a wide range of beautiful morphs), Royal Pythons, Western Hog Nose, Garter Snakes and Milk Snakes. We are often able to source other species, so please call the store and speak to a member of our team.
The most popular starter snakes are Corn Snakes and Royal Pythons - both are relatively small, docile and easy to handle.
Keeping Snakes
All snakes require a suitably-sized, ventilated, secure vivarium as they are very good at escaping; there are a wide range of vivariums available in both different colours and sizes to suit every snake.
Snakes are ectothermic in that they cannot regulate their own body temperature, and must reply on the surrounding temperature to heat up their body. Warming up their body enables them to move and find food, digest that food and metabolise the nutrients effectively, keeping them healhy and enabling them to grow.
A heat source is required to provide this, and is positioned at one end of the housing; a ceramic heater attached to a thermostat is best as it does not emit light, and can therefore be kept on overnight to prevent any dramatic temperature drops at night time. A guard must always be used to prevent your snake coming into contact with the bulb.
This also provides a 'thermogradient' in the housing, where there is a 'warmer' end with the basking spot directly under the heat source, and a 'cooler' end away from the heat source. If you provide sufficient hides throughout, your snake can move around at will and warm up or cool down, thereby regulating their own body temperature.
Snakes do not generally require UV lighting or supplementation in their diet, but it is a good idea to check their weight regularly. UV lighting can be used to enhance the snake's colouration and to provide a light source if needed.
All snakes require water, but some enjoy bathing in water so a suitably-sized, non-spillable water dish should be supplied.
Should hatchlings be kept in small enclosures?
Some people believe that hatchling snakes should be kept in small vivariums or they will become nervous and may fail to eat and thrive. However, it is far more economical to purchase an adult-sized vivarium and provide lots of hides and furnishings. This enables the hatchling to move around freely and regulate its body temperature at will, whilst feeling safe and secure. After all, hatchlings in the wild don't stay in one small place!
Frozen Food
We sell a wide range of snake food from small mice pinkies up to rabbits.
Remember never to freeze food that has thawed, and to defrost your food ideally at room temperature for a couple of hours, or in warm water - never use hot water to thaw your food, and always maintain optimum hygiene when dealing with frozen / thawed food.
